ECOSIA: The search engine that plants trees

I discovered this company by chance while browsing the internet and it seems like a simple way to make the earth a better place and help plant trees. All you have to do is go to their website and follow the instructions to make ecosia your default search engine.

The way it works is they make money by companies advertising on the site and use this money to plant trees, pretty simple. They have planted over 17 million trees since the company was founded in 2009. They have a new goal to plant 1 billion tress and are steadily getting closer. It is estimated that within 100 years there will be no rainforests, we are clearing forests at the rate of 20 football fields per minute.

With Ecosia search engine it is possible to support a company trying to make the world a better place even if you don’t have money to spare. In order to save the forests and slow down deforestation there are some other important things we can do ourselves to make a difference.

  1. DON’T SUPPORT ANIMAL AGRICULTURE– Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction and is the leading cause of deforestation to make room for the animals and their feed crops. If you don’t want to see the rainforests disappear don’t eat animals.
  2. USE LESS PAPER- The U.S. uses a lot of paper, according to Rainforest Action Network, the United States has less than 5% of the world’s population yet consumes more than 30% of the world’s paper. Stop the junk mail! Call companies and ask to be removed from their mailing list if you are receive it. Bring your own bags to the grocery store and choose products with less or no packaging. Recycle the paper you do use and support companies that are reusing paper themselves.
  3. STAY EDUCATED- The internet can be a great tool to find other ways you can get active in the fight against deforestation. Knowledge is power and together our actions will bring on the changes that need to happen for life to continue on this planet.
