WHAT IS AN ECO BRICK?
An eco brick is a building block made by filling discarded plastic bottles with non-recycleable materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. They have been used in sustainable building projects like these school houses in Guatemala.
HOW TO MAKE ONE?
The first step is to collect some bottles, thicker plastic bottles with wider mouths tend to work the best ( such as 20 oz. Gatorade bottles) but any will do. Then find a stick that fits inside to jam as much into them as possible, an old broom handle cut to about 18″ works great for this. Now, instead of throwing your undesirables into the trash, stuff them into a bottle and walla, you’ve got an eco brick.
MATERIALS TO STUFF INSIDE
Just about any piece of trash can be put in an eco brick, first recycle anything that is recyclable and the rest is free game. Some items will need to be broke down or cut up before going inside like; styrofoam, old socks, jeans etc.
WHAT CAN I BUILD WITH AN ECO BRICK?
Once you’ve accumulated a stock of eco bricks the real fun can begin!
You can make walls.
